The American Sign Language honor society is open to ASL 3-4 students with an ASL average of at least 3.5 and a cumulative average of 3.2 un-weighted. Students must complete at least 5 hours of community service. At graduation, students will receive an honor cord or a Laurent Clerc Medal according to their grade point averages.

The SJA Anchor Club is a service club that is open to all students. Anchors seek to work with their Pilot Club sponsors to promote brain injury awareness and safety in all aspects of activities. Anchors also assist Pilot Club members with various local civic celebrations.

The National Art Honor Society is comprised of students who are nominated for

membership by the instructor and the administration based on the students’ exceptional artistic abilities. Members in this society are also required to have outstanding character and behavior as evidenced in their classes, school, community, outside activities, and community service.

The bee Keeping Club feeds and raises bees on campus with the ultimate goal of harvesting honey.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the SJA Drama Club is to perpetuate the arts in our high school and to ensure that each student grows in leadership, talent and community.
 

DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES

We perform two major plays each school year, attend the Northeast Florida Thespian District Competitions and compete at the state level in Tampa, Florida each year.
 

MEETINGS

The drama club meets twice a week from 3:30 to 5:30.  As performances approach, rehearsal days will be added and will be longer.

Description: During the second semester of the junior year, all practicing Catholic students are invited, through their religion classes, to consider becoming an Extraordinary Minister who will serve during their senior year. These ministers perform the important functions at St. Joseph Academy of liturgical ministry. Students are required to serve as lectors and altar servers. Students are prepared for this ministry through spiritual training and attendance on a day long retreat at Marywood Retreat Center.

Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica

Hispanic Honor Society

The St. Joseph Academy Chapter of the Hispanic Honor Society is open to third and fourth year students of Spanish. Induction is based on their overall GPA and previous years’ Spanish grades as well as an interest and enthusiasm for the Spanish language and culture.

St. Joseph Academy’s chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica participates in fundraisers and sponsors the campus wide Friendship Photos on Valentine’s Day. For the past five years we have worked together with the St. Joseph Academy Spanish Club to raise money for a missionary in Brazil.  At Christmas our members are very involved in activities to support local charitable organizations. SHH members provide peer tutoring on campus. Junior travel scholarships and senior academic scholarships are available through the national association.

Several of the members of SHH and the St. Joseph Academy Spanish Club have been selected to participate in the annual summer exchange program between St. Augustine and Aviles, Spain, which is sponsored by the St. Augustine Sister Cities Association.

  The Interact Club is a service club that is open to all students. It is sponsored by the St. Augustine Sunrise Rotary Club. Projects include adopting families at the holidays, volunteering at the St. Francis House, working with the Council of Aging and other community service agencies.

The motto of the Interact Club is “Service Above Self”.

Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Junior College Mathematics Honor Society.  Membership is by invitation only.

Active members are high school students who have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and in addition have completed, or are enrolled in, a fifth semester of mathematics, provided that this work has been done with distinction.  Students must maintain a 3.5GPA in mathematics courses.

Members shall demonstrate ability to work with others and to conduct independent research, and shall possess qualities of industry, initiative, and reliability.  Members are required to sign up for peer-tutoring sessions.  The chapter sponsor keeps the master calendar of tutors.  If a member is not able to attend their tutoring session, they are required to find a replacement member and let the sponsor know of the change in tutors.

Tutoring is open to all students of St. Joseph Academy and tutoring sessions are held in Room 14 after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Tutoring is always supervised by a math instructor.

The Music Ministry program is open to all students who wish to minister to our community (and perhaps beyond) through music and song.  Music Ministers serve as song and musical leaders during all-school Masses and occasionally at other functions as well.  Students may earn school service hours by attending practices, which are generally 1-2 afternoons a week in the school chapel.

The San Jose Chapter of National Honor Society

MISSION STATEMENT

Members of the San Jose Chapter of the National Honor Society are students who shall create an enthusiasm for scholarship by stimulating a desire to render service, by promoting worthy leadership, and by encouraging the development of character in all students at St. Joseph Academy.

SELECTION

To be eligible for an invitation for membership, the candidate must have been in attendance at St. Joseph Academy for a period of one year. Only those students who have achieved Sophomore or Junior status and have an unweighted 3.5 cumulative scholastic average are eligible. A Faculty Council interviews each student and then makes the selection of members.

DUTIES

The members serve as role models for the student body at St. Joseph Academy. National Honor Society service responsibilities begin with direct assistance to faculty and staff as requested. Other areas of participation include hosting the annual Open House for Prospective Students, mentoring at freshman orientation, and assisting the administration with baccalaureate and graduation.

The Prayer Club is open to all students who have a desire to deepen their relationships with God and to lift up members of our community and beyond in prayer.  The Club meets once a week after school in the chapel.  Meetings include a Scripture reading and prayer for particular intentions offered by any member of the SJA community.  A box is available in the chapel for students, faculty, and family members to place intentions.

Quill and Scroll is an International Honor Society. Membership is only open to juniors and seniors who fulfill the following qualifications:

•  Ranked in the top 1/3 of their class of a Quill and Scroll chartered school
• Contribute to a form of journalism
• Nominated by a journalism teacher

SJA first applied for charter school status in the 1970's and resumed membership for the publishing of the 1973 Yearbook.

As an International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, the purpose of the Quill and Scroll is to instill in students the ideal of scholarship; to advance the standards of the profession of journalism by developing better journalists and by inculcating a higher code of ethics; to promote exact and dispassionate thinking, clear and forceful writing.

The recycling club meets to collect recyclable items around campus and organize recycling and clean up events around town.

The Robotics clubs learns how to build robots and also participates in the First Tech Challenge Competition" annually, which consists of multiple meets per year at Bolles HS in Jacksonville

The Science Club meets weekly. Officer elections are held in September for president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. Costs associated with the club depend on the projects decided upon by the moderator and students. Typical costs should be less than $50.00 to cover material expenses. Science Club provides a hands-on science experience with a focus on expanding the knowledge base and skill set of the members. All are welcome to attend.

The Spanish Club fosters an interest and enthusiasm for the Spanish language and culture.

Spanish Club makes donations to the school's mission trips, as well as, Project Share at Christmas. 

Cultural Field Trips: 1 per semester. The plays, dance shows and concerts that we have the chance to see are usually held in Jacksonville. The dates are not available yet.

The student council is a group of students elected by their peers who represent a given constituency. The standards for a student council are multi-faceted. The St. Joseph Academy Student Council sets the pace for academic achievement, moral standards and spiritual guidance within the Academy. St. Joseph Academy believes this can best be achieved through a Christ-like atmosphere. St. Joseph Academy’s Student Council believes in the uniqueness of each person and strives to assist the individual and the student body with a spirit of Christian witness. All students are welcome to contact their elected officers and/or the academic adviser at any time with their concerns.

Students for the Poor is a student-run club in which students serve the poor, raise awareness of the poor, and raise funds for projects that support the poor. The goal of the club is to develop the students’ passion for service toward helping those in desperate need within their local community and abroad. Active club members would also have priority over non-club members in the selection process for school-sponsored overseas mission trips.

During the First Semester, students interview veterans, write their stories and submit them for publication in a book that is part of the Library of Congress.  In addition, VHP members participate in events at school and in the community.  This year we presented the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony and will honor veterans along with the rest of SJA on November 10.  In addition, we will participate in the Veterans Day event on Anastasia Island and Wreaths Across America in St. Augustine.  Our big event in the Second Semester will be the Book Reception May 1st.
