Our Mission is to develop and sustain a program that represents the institution, alumni, supporters, student-athletes and staff in the most positive manner, in line with the overriding mission of our institution.
One indicator of our success will be the performance of our team in competition. That, however, will not solely reflect the measure of our success. Our success also lies in developing our student-athletes athletically, academically, socially, and spiritually to pursue their life goals within and beyond the game by focusing on four fundamental values: Force/Focus, Intensity/Integrity, Respect/Responsibility, and Energy/Encouragement.
It is my sincere belief that by approaching our program in this manner, winning games will be one of the natural biproducts. These overlapping values lie as the bedrock of our program:
Force/Focus:
We will instill in our student-athletes the fundamental value of fulfilling their commitments. No organization can achieve positive results without an innate Focus among its members that each is acting in the best interests of the group. We expect our student-athletes to continually honor their total commitment to each other, the team, and the institution.
To establish this level of responsibility it will be vital to create clear Standards for our student-athletes. Establishing standards builds a higher and higher level of self-Discipline over time. They will understand that we will accept nothing less than the standards in every phase of their lives. To achieve those standards, our student-athletes will learn to make the hard choices, often sacrificing their individual desires to meet the needs of our team. The concept of Force means we play at high level at both ends of the court that forces teams to play our style of play which we believe will ultimately lead us to victory
Beyond athletics, embracing the values of Focus will translate to success in classroom as well. Balancing the day-to-day of school and athletics requires a high-level of focus to be able to multi-task books and basketball which is a life-skill that will translate into adult life once the student-athletes leave SJA.
Intensity/Integrity:
We will continually emphasize to our student-athletes the need to accomplish the team’s purpose with transparent motives, in ways consistent with our Shared Vision of the organization. Genuine, strong relationships are forged in the foundation of Intense and Open Competition and an open collaboration of ideas and concerns among coaches. This ability to communicate honestly allows coaches and players a comfortable learning environment where everyone is given the room and tools to grow.
We will place tremendous emphasis on maintaining Integrity, even in the face of adversity. We all must learn to overcome challenges and obstacles, without compromising our Character and display the ability to deal with those challenges directly. Meeting obstacles head on, together, builds Loyalty to each other, the team and the institution.
Trust, integrity, character, and loyalty are simply words unless they are acted on daily. By focusing our actions on these concepts, we can create a program based on a genuine regard for the organization and its individual members. There are no pretenders or imposters in the group; rather, each is an authentic part of the fabric.
Respect/Responsibility:
As a team and as coaches our goal will always be to respect the coaches, players, and officials whenever we play. We will always carry ourselves in a manner to shows respect to the game and to our opponents. There will be no running up of the score unnecessarily as we believe that leads to instilling habits of terrible sportsmanship. We will win games and always play the right way.
Responsibility is a character trait that is needed both on the court and off the court. We believe in accountability and that is a non-negotiable both on the court and off the court. Both as players and coaches we take responsibility for our actions and the consequences that come with those actions.
Energy/Encouragement:
We believe that there are 3 things that we can all control: Our Energy, Our Effort, and Our Attitude. As a result, our teams will always play a fast-paced high energy style of basketball that will require total buy in from players, coaches, and parents. Encouragement is a necessity both in basketball and life. There are challenges that come during game play and from life in general. Encouragement is something all need and that we can all give. With everyone on board and committed we can see ultimate success both on and off the court. Energy is contagious so once it spreads it can affect many areas of life. We’re better together.
In developing our student-athletes athletically, academically, socially and spiritually to pursue their life goals within and beyond the game by focusing on four fundamental values: Responsibility, Authenticity, Determination, and Generosity. We are equally as proud of the young men who have gone on to play beyond High School as we are of those who are now succeeding outside of basketball at the collegiate level and beyond.
